Your Gift Directs Your Heart

Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Luke 12:33-34

Common understanding:
Your treasure will go where your heart is.

Jesus’ teaching:
To redirect your heart, redirect your treasure.

God wants our heart.

My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. Proverbs 23:26

Definition of heart:
The vital or main part, the essence or core of your being

I give God my heart by giving Him my treasure.

Your gift is made up of your time, talent and treasure.

Where you invest your time, talent and treasure is where the core and essence of your being will go.

Your gift is the steering wheel of your heart.

Rich young ruler challenged to sell all he had and give it away.

22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich. Luke 18:22-23

You cannot serve God and Mammon.

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24

Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? Luke 16:11

Members of the Early church sold their possessions.

Ananias wanted the recognition without giving his gift.

But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?” Acts 5:3

Man chooses his way, God directs his steps.

A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Prov. 16:9

Choose this day who you will serve.

“…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Jos. 24:15

There is a cost to choosing.

“If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’?” Luke 14:26-30

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25

When you bring your gift to the altar, God will convict and lead.

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Mt. 5:23-24

The steering wheel of your heart is your gift.

Follow the nudges of the Holy Spirit in using your gift.

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit… Eph. 5:18
